Shopping Do's & Don'ts

Was talking to one of my friends about shopping at a yarn store this weekend, and she mentioned that she did not like it when yarn stores organize their yarns by color. This got me to thinking - whether you are shopping for yarn, beads, drawing paper/pencils/etc, scrapbooking stuff, and other craftey stuff - what do you like and dont like when you go to buy your stuff? Do you want a salesperson to help you? Would you rather just browse on your own? Do you wish they had put the items in a different section of the store? What makes your favorite store(s) your favorite stores?

Spill da beanz ya'all lol

I loathe it when stores organize by color - how incredibly inconvenient! I usually shop for a yarn, not a color. And when I am doing a project that requires several colors, I do not want to be pacing the store to match everything up. Bleh.

I like when things are organized by color - but i think it's also helpful when organized by type/style/etc too.

I work at Old Navy, and our clearance sections are organized by color within size now. before, we used to organize by color within size, but break it down to similar styles (collared/work shirts, sweaters, tanks, tees, etc.) but corporate came in and said NO! do it by color only.

yes, it does give a nice visual presentation, but it is frustrating to me when you're looking for a somewhat specific item (e.g. things to wear to work) you have to "dig through" so many things which are inappropriate.

so, when you're shopping for something specific, color is not necessarily good when all the styles/types are mixed together. My favorite local bead store ( The Bead Boutique organizes by style and color - so it's always easy to find what you're looking for. (and if you're still having trouble, they're super helpful!)
