Knitting Squares

I have decided I needed a break from the usual knitting projects and do some 'mindless' knitting. So I started knitting squares - all knitted, no purl. They are fairly small too, so it makes me feel like I have accomplished something even sooner lol

What will I do with all these squares? I have it narrowed down to something for my dogs =) They are not fussy, and they will not notice if everything isnt perfectly done. They are my perfect test subjects...

I just need to decide if I should make a pillow or a blanket. My husband votes for the pillow - but I do not want to create a pillow by adding stuffing, as I can just picture them pulling out the stuffing a bit a t a time. I *could* buy a pillow and just make a pillow case, that way, it would be easy to wash it. The only problem with leaving the end of the pillowcase open is that the pillowcase might slip off - which would defeat my intended purpose for the pups. I know this may be an unlikely scenario, but...

I could also just make a blanket, but then they would have to share it. I could make 2 blankets, but then the project would get a bit bigger than I had originally intended. Altho, they would also have to share the pillow/pillowcase, so maybe I would need to do two of those also?

Ughh. Again, its for my pups - they wont care that much - why am I overanalyzing this? lol Any thoughts y'all? =)

Geraniums

My geranium plant is looking odd. I would love to have it bloom so I can cut some of the flowers off to put inside or try my hand at preserving/drying them. The latter is what made me think about posting this up here - but then, I don't have any blooms. I just have an *extremely* tall geranium with NO blooms. It is the most odd looking geranium plant I have seen.

And of course I managed to grow the oddest geranium plant. Yay me??!! lol

Anyway! I DO want it to bloom, not only so that I can snip a few blooms and try to be craftey, BUT so that I can actually not be *that* neighbor. Ya know... the neighbor who kills plants or only grows weird stuff? =)

So, will post the picture of it and see if anyone has any insight. It does look like it could start blooming. But its been that way for a month and a half...

Ugh.. anyway! Enjoy the picture of my funky looking geranium lol

Tattoos

Originally, I started surfing the web for ideas on how to preserve butterflies actually - not anything really 'artsy'. Once upon a time, I used to try to collect them and pin them in a case - tho, their frail wings would crumble soon after. I initially brought up pages about butterflies and what they symbolize. This then led to tattoos of butterflies, and well.....

Here we are with another blog post =)

Cuz, some people who do get tattoos do view it as art. I have a tattoo on my ankle and even though I do not view it as art, I do think it symbolizes who I am, what I like, etc. While I would not get another tattoo, I have had experience with people whose views towards tattoos are not like mine. They have the tattoo artist create something original, they draw something that depicts their artistic talent, or they may simply have a copy of something altered in some fashion to truly show how they view things.

So anyway - I thought I would share my thoughts and also the picture of the butterfly tattoo that inspired this blog =)

Dining Decor

My husband and I were out of town the other day for work-related stuff and ended up eating at a restaurant outside of Allentown, PA. Actually, they had rooms too - so it was a country inn place with a fancy restaurant =) I really loved their dining room decor - and after looking at their website and thinking on it more, I am pretty sure it wouldnt't be too hard to make some of the decor for the walls of your own house (see picture below).

The red flower picture would be relatively simple - just a few rustic boards painted white and the red flower painted on. However, the horse picture to the left might be a bit harder to duplicate. If I am looking at it right, I think someone took a thick piece of wood and carved the horse into it & painted the recessed background black.

Has anyone done much wood carving? Or do you think they created this picture differently? I may have to give it a try - tho, not sure where I would put a horse picture at actually. If it turns out good, I could always give it as a gift or *find* room for it =) Otherwise, if it turns out horrid, I just might throw it away lol

Or maybe use it as kindling for a bonfire? =)

Lace & You Tube

Yup, y'all! This is actually *knitting* related lol I know my husband says I hate knitting, but I generally don't if all is going well =) Or if someone else is knitting something for me. Or if I buy something knitted. Or if I am admiring a page in a magazine that has something knitted, or...

Well, you get my point =)

I am NOT an experienced knitter like my friend Dee Anna. Seriously. I know she thinks I am trying to be nice just to have her knit something for me, but I am REALLY impressed with her dedication and her talent.

ANYWOOOO!!

I have restarted my lace project about 3 times already, and if it wasn't for my stubborn nature, I would throw it to the side and pretend it never even got started =) BUT, I decided that *maybe* if I googled You Tube vids of yarn overs that *maybe* it could help me.

I do not want to sound bad to the long-term knitters out there - but what DID y'all do before You Tube? lol Seriously, seeing a picture in a book is not the same as seeing it on You Tube. UNLESS you are already an experienced knitter! Which I am not....

So to keep this blog post short - thank you! You Tube!

I *may* be able to finish this lace project yet =)

Air Guitar?

Well, y'all, if I wasn't already busy I would be busy checking this out tonite =) Kinda reminds me of the Blue Man group with no props - just dancing and acting like they are playing some bad a$$ guitar riffs lol In addition, if it wasn't for the fact that I don't know how to play guitar and therefore even play air guitar badly (husband says my hands are not at ALL where they should be when a person is actually playing a guitar), I would enter! Altho, I do know of a couple of guys who stand on the corner by 'Little Caesars' pizza place that practice on an almost daily basis. Methinks they should join! Or maybe they have and thats why they have such skillz!! hehe

How is this art related? Heck - y'all don't think dancing can be an art? =)

Brookside Art Festival/Studio Trip

No pics of this event y'all! I tried to take a pic of some stuff in a booth once we got there, but the gal was NOT happy with me doing so. Soo.... I got terribly paranoid about taking any pics after that lol I guess I could have taken some at the Studio, as they are relaxed/easygoing - but got a little sidetracked there trying to buy something that I am hoping will get me back on track with my knitting =) Could have take pics during lunch at Blancburgers maybe, too - but figured thats a terribly rude thing of me to do. I know I am not the most graceful when it comes to eating - would hate to have someone taking pics of my horrid eating habits lol

Anywhooo! Have decided I am going to try knitting lace - woot! GO ME =) Gonna use the below pattern, so we shall see how it turns out. Anyone knit lace much? Do you like or dislike it? Should I be finding bulkier projects to knit? lol

Windex, Vinegar & Peroxide

Lately, we have had to clean a tempurpedic mattress - so off I went googling to find the best course of action =) I found it interesting that there are some everyday household and/or kitchen items that could be used. And not only for a tempurpedic mattress. For instance:

Windex
Hardwood floors
Clean area rugs
Erase marks on dry erase boards
Cleans lipstick smears (not that I wear much lipstick, but maybe y'all do =))
Seems to help the itch of poison ivy

Vinegar
Removes mineral deposits from coffee makers
Makes newly cleaned ovens smell better
Discourages ants
Makes cleaning the grill easier
Clean up pet accidents
Helps get decals off walls & doors

Peroxide
Clean yellowed or stained plastic
Clean cutting boards
Clean a tempurpedic mattress (altho, uhh - be careful! it will bleach spots if you concentrate it too heavily in one area!!)

Arts & Crafts Trip

Well, several gals and I decided to hit Urban Arts & Crafts in KC off of 69 Hwy today =) I did not buy anything, tho was *really* tempted to buy some beads and some stamping stuff (yes, I am one of *those* people lol). I snuck a few pix of the gals and the craft store cat while I was at it:

And of course, whats a craftey store without the spiffy lookin' cat to pet & luv on!

After our craft store run, we headed to River Market for an Ethiopian restuarant one of the gals said we should try. Other than not being very coordinated eating without utensils, I thought eating Ethiopian food was really darn good!

We then made the trek around River Market area and got some great deals on strawberries & seasonings and then called it a day!

No, wait - the gals who carpooled with me ended up going to Russell Stovers too for truffles lol THEN we called it a day =)

I have to admit, I did not watch the Oscars last night - and I think I am one of the few that didn't (if Twitter is any judge of what people were doing last night anyway lol) However, I was thinking that acting *is* art, and worthy of a blog post on here =)

Andy Warhol

I find it interesting that a large majority of Warhol's art was of animals. My particular favorite is the dachshund pictures since I have a couple of those lovable pups myself. Altho, I would like to think I could draw better pics of my dogs lol But I figured I would post a few of the animals pictures of his I found for y'all's viewing pleasure =)

Note: I *do* have to wonder of these are just 'Warhol inspired' pictures. If anyone knows if thats true - please let me know!

Deer Hats

Well, I got a bit embarassed on Ravelry the other day! Was exchanging messages about Christmas stuff we are knitting and this particular gal replies:

"My SIL wanted not 1 but 3 of the fornicating deer hats. I have one left to go, a few mittens, slippers and a few hats…."

To which I immediately go WTF? lol Fornicating deer hats? Do you wear them in order to attract deer? Do I wanna know what these hats are like? What they are made out of?

My husband seemed positive that she was using the word 'fornicating' as another way to say f*ck in a nice way. Like a form of exasperation ya know? So I ask, and learned that it is actually a pattern called 'fornicating deer hat' that she is knitting lol

Am I the only one who didn't know these existed? I found a website/blog that shows a picture of them for your viewing pleasure =)

Fall Decor

OK Y'all , I have managed to get 2 bales of hay (err, brome rather), a scarecrow, bundle of corn husks (or as my husband likes to call it, 'tall grassey sh*t' lol) and a few squash by the side of the house in order to decorate for Fall. Pub Art

I was at a friend's birthday party at a local dive bar the other day and spotted this piece of 'art' hanging on the wall. Therefore, despite my crappy cell phone camera, I took a pic of it - AND if you look really, really, REALLY close you can tell what it says lol

Gladiolas

Behold a couple of stems from my gladiolas! Aint they pretty? lol Actually, its a bit disappointing that my camera doesnt capture the detail a bit better - must figure out how to remedy that =) They are a gorgeous orange tho...... too bad they will not stay that way forever. I mean, I don't think you can actually dry out gladiolas and keep 'em (sides, that would be ugly and pointless). Just be kinda nice to spray 'em - freeze em in time so to speak you know? Or can you? It would be nice to have proof for years to come that I do not kill *everything* in my flower bed lol

CRAFT Beer?

Yeah, I know this is a tad off the typical blog post I write, but I have been a googlin' maniac these last few days. First, it was to see what kind of things people knit for the 4th of July (which I subjected the knitters to on Ravelry.com btw lol). Tonite? Well, it was unintentional coming up with the beer thing, but when I typed in crafts, the 6th thing down was 'craft beer', which made me chuckle =) I suppose the definition of craft is 'the skilled practice of a practical occupation', so making beer fits right in! Altho, I am not sure my ability (my VERY limited ability) to knit has become a practical occupation - there isnothing practical about it. And I am certainly not good enuf to have it be an occupation lol

Paper Mache

So, did y'all know paper mache means 'chewed up paper'? =) Yup, I learned that today and I thought I would pass this information on to y'all! I have never done much paper mache myself, but it might be a fun family event for any of you with kids, or for others who are still kids themselves, or just for grownups that just plain ole like to do something different. Got a party for one of your kids coming up? Make a pinata! Love to decorate for Christmas? Make a snowman! Got doubts that the snowman would look good? Life Made Easier

I know I have done many craftey things without some of the 'extras' that make it that much easier to get them done. Even just the simple things I seem to not have to help me out. For instance, when I knit, I do not have stitch markers. These are relatively inexpensive and can really help keep track of where you are at. But I do not have them...

Another case in point, when I draw, I do not have things like a ruler to help me draw a straight line. I do not have a compass to draw the perfect circle. I only have one eraser, and its pretty darn old. All of these things could make my life a lot easier lol

Am I the only one? Do other people find that when they have these things, it *does* help out? What has been the most helpful item to get your craftey item(s) done?

Do you 'hoard' anything?

I am sure - since many of you are knitters - hoard yarn to a certain extent right? =) Do you hoard anything else? Is it obvious what you DO hoard, or is it all tucked away somewhere and out of peoples' site for the most part?

I looked up the definition of hoarding by the way - yeah, cuz I am a nerd like that lol There are 2 types of hoarding - regular hoarding is characterized kinda like a squirrel gathering nuts for the winter (where you might perceive outages of the item in the near future). The other is called compulsive hoarding - where there stuff acquired by the person is not necessary. Wiki describes the latter as items that are worthless, hazardous or unsanitary lol

A Bear

Once upon a time, my X's Dad gave me this bear - courtesy of one of the many garage sales he went to at the time =) I love it - not only cuz I thought alot of my X's Dad (and considered him a WAY better parent than my own father), but also, since it is an original - I bet not many people have this exact bear! This picture is not the greatest of it - especially when I havent dusted it for a bit *Lisa looks ashamed* So please excuse the fuzz hanging from his ear lol

Anywho! The one thing that does bother me about this bear is that someone put *something* inside of it. When you pick the bear up, you hear a noise - I think its probably a penny, but I am not sure. I would like to know, but that would mean finding a way to get IN the bear. Should I drill a hole on the bottom? It looks and feels solid, but obviously it must be somewhat hollow inside to have put something in there thats driving me crazy not knowing what it is. And it does not feel/look like the typical clay you would make pottery out of you know? Or am I wrong? And would me drilling a hole in the bottom shatter it to pieces?

Shoes & Shoelaces

The above pictures are of some loafers that I am trying to 'save' - altho, judging from the inside of the shoe, that may seem kinda pointless lol But you can always put in inserts right? And sides, its really hard to find some shoes that you really like at times.

Anyway! I will stop justifying my reasons for trying to 'save' the shoe and get to the point lol The shoelace has broken again, and it had already been knotted up once. I would just replace the shoelace, except its woven into the sides of the shoe - so I am not quite sure how I can manage to get the laces out without damaging the shoe itself. Hopefully the pix show what I am talking about - not sure how else to explain it.

So, like, does anyone have any ideas how to get a new shoelace in the shoe so I dont have to get a new pair of shoes that I hopefully like better? =)

Well, with the week plus of no husband, I did end up watching a bit more TV than usual lol And one is unable to avoid the infommercials that are advertised, especially late at night. But it did get me to thinking........out of all of these things, which one do you guys think is the best? What do you wish they would invent?

I think they should invent a TV that you can clap and turn off and on and/or tell it to go to Channel So and So and Poof! there ya are lol I sound lazy huh? =) Isnt a remote enuf you say? And I saw, HECK NO hehe

Lace Curtains

Anyone ever made lace curtains? I am thinking about attempting those for my next project, but wanna know if I am crazy for thinking so lol Anyone ever made curtains out of anything? I know my husband made window accent....err.... thingie .....for one of our rooms and it turned out fairly well. We basically got cardboard, foam and the material and poof! a window accent thingie was born lol Altho, we may be redoing it - seems to not be holding its shape well, so may be looking into somethign a bit more sturdy. But not *too* heavy - as we dont wanna tear holes in our wall =)

Shopping Do's & Don'ts

Was talking to one of my friends about shopping at a yarn store this weekend, and she mentioned that she did not like it when yarn stores organize their yarns by color. This got me to thinking - whether you are shopping for yarn, beads, drawing paper/pencils/etc, scrapbooking stuff, and other craftey stuff - what do you like and dont like when you go to buy your stuff? Do you want a salesperson to help you? Would you rather just browse on your own? Do you wish they had put the items in a different section of the store? What makes your favorite store(s) your favorite stores?

Recycled Kitty Litter

Not too long ago, Knittersreview.com posted information about someone who took kitty litter and recycled it to create yarn. They are now opening up stores that feauture this yarn. While I am glad there are people out there that do not want to ....ummm......waste things, this seems a bit silly. I have to wonder how much energy it takes to recycle kitty litter and if the effort is really worth it. Or if its only a marketing ploy to get fiber addicts to buy something new. Watcha all think? Clothes

I figgered I needed some new shoes tonite, so I went to DSW online to search for some (cuz, umm......I am a freak and HATE going to stores). One of the first things that I notice are their new rain boots - they are all decorated with something (like the below picture).

Which got lil ole me to thinking, why couldnt a person just take a plain ole boot and decorate it him/herself? I am not sure how well things like puff paint would stay on a boot exposed to the weather like that, but......

And of course, all this got me to thinking of other clothes you can make and/or decorate. Like when I was younger, I was jealous of everyone but me having stone washed jeans, and since we didnt have much money to get me brand new jeans, I took some bleach and splashed it all over some garage sale jeans I already had. Suffice it to say, it was a rather unique look that I do not remember anyone copying, but I was happy with them. And that all that matters right? =) Well... lemme rephrase that, I did have one complaint. It took MANY washings to get those jeans not to smell like bleach lol

So anyone else been creative like lil ole moi? =)

Knitting Magazines

I bought two knitting magazines tonight while at Barnes & Noble - along with the 'To Kill a Mockingbird' for my college class and a Godiva milk chocolate candy bar. Just thought I would tell you about the last one, just to rub it in that I had one and you all didnt lol

Just bein' silly =) And on to more silly-ness!

Have you ever noticed knitting mags have the oddest pictures, captions and such? I *know* we have talked about this before at our get togethers, but..... to have a caption that reads "Knit Like a French Girl" on the cover? Uhhh.... hmm..... not exactly sure whats wrong with knitting like the American gal I am, but....

And the pics in this latest issue have several of the gals standing by HUGE balls of yarn. I am no knitting expert, but I have stayed at a Holiday Inn Express (isnt that how the commercial goes? lol), and I know that NO one has that big of yarn balls laying about. I mean these things are about the size of basketballs. Its pretty friggin incredible.....err, I mean ridiculous lol

Car Accessories

I was thinking on the way home today that I needed to add a 'personal' touch to the inside of my jeep. An air freshener I made with potpouri perhaps? A cool and groovy Steering wheel cover? I *do* know how to knit, so maybe I could knit one lol

Have any of you guys made your cars more 'personal'? Made something especially for the big hunk of metal that carries you to and from places? =) Have you ever fixed anyting cosmetically on your cars?

OK, I know ya'all have done some sort of artwork when you were in grade school =) Whether its glueing pasta on cardboard, sketching a portrait of you and your family or filling a vase with different colored sands - ya'all made something during those young years of your life that you were awfully proud of or remember more so than any other. Buttons

Have you ever noticed that some things *should* seem quite simple? No? Its just me? lol Well, anywhoo....

I know how to sew plain ole buttons on pants. However, the buttons that jeans usually come equipped with really confuse me. I understand there is basically two parts to them & that you need to coneect them together to "make" the button. How is this done tho? You find the hole the button used to be in - stick it back thru and just push the two parts together??

Am not sure I am making sense on this, so am gonna include a picture of several of these types of buttons for ya'all to look at. Would be handy to know how to do these sorts of buttons, as I seem to lose a bunch of them for some reason. Especially any decorative ones that my big butt sits on it seems lol

We are also looking at having a 'How-to' class on the basics of car maintenance (i.e change oil, change tires, charging a battery, etc.) at my house in Shawnee around the last weekend of March or first weekend of April most likely. Will letcha all know time/date when its decided - let me know if you have a preference of time/date too!

Hair

I am loosing WAY too much hair. I seriously do not think anyone else I know leaves his/her hair on everything =/ I do the laundry and put on a shirt *right* out of the dryer - it has clumps of hair inside the friggin shirt. I sit in my jeep during my lunch break at work and I look around and see loose hair everywhere. I put my coat on in the morning before heading out to work, my hand comes out of the sleeve with hair on it.

There is hair in my shower drain.

There is hair on the chair I sit in at work.

There is hair in my socks & shoes.

There is hair in our bed.

There is hair on the floor.

Its EVERWHERE - including my head ironically. Cuz you wouldnt think after loosing this much hair, that I would have any left.

My point? I wanna know everyone's tips (vitamins, conditioners, vitamin conditioners, glue .... err, just seeing if ya'all were paying attention with the last one lol) that I can try to KEEP my hair in/on my head.

Macy's Chocolate Tin

We were given a tin box from Macy's full of chocolate for a Christmas gift. It is now empty - honestly, its been empty for quite some time, but.....

Anyway! I was wondering what I will now do with the tin. I thought about saving it & just using it for storage, but I already have several that I am doing that with and do not really *need* another. I could set it out on the counter, but its not really pretty on the outside. Its just a reddish-brown tin with Macys on it lol

So.... what should I do with it? Should I not be environmentally friendly and throw it away? What all have you guys done with tins like that? Would it be hard to redecorate it?

OK, am curious ya'all.... while I was exercising tonight, I began to wonder what the first thing you created (art, knitted stuff, beadwork, etc etc etc) that you were the most proud of and why? Do you still have it around today? =)

Yeah, I am weird - I think about the goofiest things while exercising! lol Heck, it helps keep my mind off of how I realllllllly do not wanna be exercising!

Homemade Exfoliants

With this cold weather, I have noticed my skin tends to be *alot* drier than usual. In the past, I have made a homemade exfoliant that was basically just sugar & olive oil combined. You then take a loofah and rub it all over your dry body parts. While it is a mess to clean up afterwords, it does work remarkably well. However, there is also the problem that you need to make it before you take the shower/bath, as I do not know of any way that it could just sit in a jar and be as effective. Part of what makes it work - I think - is the sugar granules rubbing off any dead skin cells, and then the olive oil gives you the moisture back after you have done so. If the sugar sits in the olive oil too long, I think it would dissolve and be just plain nasty.

Has anyone else tried something similar? Any tips?

Yup! I have officially started a blog for everyone to view for upcoming events - aren't I spiffy? lol For any new gals, we have had a knitting group for several years now and have decided that we need to have an area online for everyone to post ideas for events, thoughts on projects and such. However, we have also decided that we do not want to be *just* a knitting group. We want to encourage anyone interested in any arts or crafts to join us, such as beading, drawing, cross stitch and more. We also encourage anyone to just drop by and hang out with us, as we not only get together to do our arts and crafts, but we do schedule social events for us all to do.

I know I am a bit biased, but I think we have an AWESOME group of gals! Anyone who joins us always feels welcome, and anyone is also able to speak their mind. We talk about anything and everything, and even though that sometimes interferes with us getting our projects done, I think it makes for a very relaxed and fun group to be with =)
